چکیده

We propose a natural process for allocating n balls into n bins that are organized as the vertices of an undirected graph G. Each ball first chooses a vertex u in G uniformly at random. Then the ball performs a local search in G starting from u until it reaches a vertex with local minimum load, where the ball is finally placed on. In our main result, we prove that this process yields a maximum load of only Θ(log logn) on expander graphs. In addition, we show that for d-dimensional grids the maximum load is Θ (( logn log logn ) 1 d+1 ) . Finally, for almost regular graphs with minimum degree Ω(logn), we prove that the maximum load is constant and also reveal a fundamental difference between random and arbitrary tie-breaking rules.

Balls into bins via local search: cover time and maximum load

We study a natural process for allocating m balls into n bins that are organized as the vertices of an undirected graph G. Balls arrive one at a time. When a ball arrives, it first chooses a vertex u in G uniformly at random. Then the ball performs a local search in G starting from u until it reaches a vertex with local minimum load, where the ball is finally placed on. Then the next ball arriv...

Fractional Matching Via Balls-and-Bins

In this paper we relate the problem of finding structures related to perfect matchings in bipartite graphs to a stochastic process similar to throwing balls into bins. Given a bipartite graph with n nodes on each side, we view each node on the left as having balls that it can throw into nodes on the right (bins) to which it is adjacent. If each node on the left throws exactly one ball and each ...

Perfectly Balanced Allocation

We investigate randomized processes underlying load balancing based on the multiple-choice paradigm: m balls have to be placed in n bins, and each ball can be placed into one out of 2 randomly selected bins. The aim is to distribute the balls as evenly as possible among the bins. Previously, it was known that a simple process that places the balls one by one in the least loaded bin can achieve ...

Balanced Allocations: Balls-into-Bins Revisited and Chains-into-Bins

The study of balls-into-bins games or occupancy problems has a long history since these processes can be used to translate realistic problems into mathematical ones in a natural way. In general, the goal of a balls-into-bins game is to allocate a set of independent objects (tasks, jobs, balls) to a set of resources (servers, bins, urns) and, thereby, to minimize the maximum load. In this paper ...
